Mark Ketchell (Ketch)

Mark started to learn to skate when he was 11 and lived at Kapiti. His introduction to Inline Hockey was when the family moved to the Hutt Valley, his parents took him to the skating club where they ran an informal "fun" hockey time. The "coach" asked if he could skate backwards? Mark replied yes and the coach said - "You are on the team".

The Rimutaka IHC was established a year later (1998) and Mark was one of the core players in the clubs first regional league team - U14. Mark has been involved with the club as a player since then, apart from a short period when there was no team he could play in, during this time he became a core player in a successful Penguins U18 team.

He was a member of the first premier Renegades team to qualify for Nationals and they went on to win Gold. In recent years "Ketch" has become involved with the administration of the club, he currently serves as the club vice president. He also continues to play for our Senior team and has for several seasons given a huge amount of time coaching our junior teams - particularly, through many years, the u14s team culminating with a great National Title in 2011

Courtney Wilmshurst

Courtney started playing as a six year old in 2002 and the following year won her first national gold medal with the Levin Canucks U10 team. She stepped up to the U12’s and won gold again in 2005.The following year she played for Rangers U12 and made the Regional Junior Womens team for the first time.

Although she lives in Levin, Courtney joined the Renegades U12 team in 2007 and has played for both age grade and Senior Womens teams, winning another national gold medal with the Women in 2009. Courtney achieved the highlight of her career, so far, when she made the 2011 NZ Junior Womens Oceania team that won their series against Australia.

She was invited to play for Tasmania in the Australian National champs in 2011, winning a Gold medal for both the Junior and Senior Women teams. Courtney is also the coach of the Renegades U10 team.

Shelley Grace

Shelley is the Captain of the Renegades Senior Women's team - 2009 National Champions! (Silver 2011, Bronze 2010). At age 30, Shelley has matured in the sport over the past 4 to 5 years to become a regular appointee to the National Women's team. Her first introduction to any kind of hockey was watching NHL (National Hockey League) ice hockey games, from North America, on local TV. Inspired by what she saw, it was off to The Warehouse for a pair of cheap skates and the rest has become history. Shelley played her first "pick up" hockey with the Wainuiomata Wildcats.

She was skating with a group from Lane Street in Upper Hutt when the Rimutaka "Renegades" Club was formed. Shelley played her first organised hockey with the Capital Penguins Club In Wellington. When she was attending Massey University in Palmerston North (2000-2003), she played for the Massey Titans and for the Manawatu Dragons.

In 2004 she returned to the Hutt Valley and the Rimutaka Renegades, becoming the focus for the creation of the Renegades first Women's team. Recently Shelley was awarded Sports Woman of the Year from Ngati Tuwharetoa Maori Sports Awards.

Sandy Nimmo - Director of Coaching (Life Member)

Sandy Nimmo has been involved with the Renegades Club since 2003, when she returned to NZ after a 30 year stint in Canada. Prior to leaving the country, she was involved in Roller skating as a figure skater, dance pair and accredited judge, she qualified form Otago University with a Degree in Physical and Health Education and Christchurch Teachers College with a Secondary Schools Teachers Certificate.

While in Canada she qualified at the University of Toronto with a B.Sc in Political Science and Economics and amassed a huge C.V. in skate sports including:

Roller coaching at elite, national and world level in Dance and Figure skating, National and International roller judge(CIPA B cert). Ice Judging for 25 years in all disciplines from test level to national level and Ice coaching top level skaters assigned by the national association. Ten years coaching Roller and Inline hockey including coach/manager to the gold medal winning Canadian womens team at the inaugural world roller champs on Germany 1992, then winning gold again in 2002 as coach/manager of the Canadian women at the inaugural Inline world champs.

Back in N.Z. Sandy is a qualified Level one and two coach and is an accredited coach assessor, she has continued to coach Artistic skaters to World Championship level.

Since she joined the club, Sandy has used her vast experience to develop the strength of local Inline Hockey, creating a program to introduce skate sports to schools, coaching teams, training coaches, and organising training camps. Sandy has also facilitated the arrival of players from Canada to help coach and raise the standards of local players and used her international contacts to provide a pathway for local players to pursue their dreams of playing hockey in the leagues of North America and Europe. Our teams consistently feature at the top of the regional competitions and national championships and our players are often selected for regional and national teams.

In 2010 Sandy was given Life Membership of the club

Nick Thom

Nick is currently the Captain of the Renegades Premier Men's team. He started playing Inline/Roller Hockey about 10 years ago, before the Renegades Club existed. A Canadian player, temporarily in the Hutt Valley, was instrumental in setting up what was then the Upper Hutt Jets. They started off playing on tennis courts with a ball. After a couple of years, the Rimutaka "Renegades" Club was born and became affiliated with the New Zealand Inline Hockey Association. Another couple of years went by before they moved, with the Upper Hutt Roller Skating Club, into their current leased and small premises on Goodshed Road in Upper Hutt.

Nick is a former National Inline Speed Skating Champion and that ability has definitely helped him become a very good player. Nick has never been interested in playing representative hockey (at a Regional or National level)- until this year (2011) where he was player/coach for NZ Masters team at the Oceanias. His biggest highlights came, firstly, when the Men's team won the Queens Birthday weekend tournament hosted by the New Plymouth Ravens as it was the first big win for a Renegades Senior team. The second highlight was being part of the team to win the National Senior Men's title in 2006 and that was the first time a Renegades Men's team had even qualified for the National Championships.

Nick is now 33 and still enjoying hockey in the Senior Men's ranks.
In his other life, he is a Police Officer.

Chris Phillips

Chris was the Asst. Captain of the Renegades Under 18s team in 2009 that took gold at Nationals! He provided good leadership to the team on the floor and served his team well all season with his outstanding defense. Being 185cm tall gives Chris awesome reach as a defenseman and will probably contribute greatly to a long term successful future in Inline Hockey and possibly in Ice Hockey as well.

Chris has been playing Inline Hockey for 10 years, almost the entire time that Renegades have existed. He joined with his brother Nick in 1999 in the Under 10s grade, coached by Mike Slade at that time. From about 2002, Chris had decided that Inline Hockey was going to be his #1 sport (he also plays cricket). He attended a camp coordinated by Renegades and run by Travis Dillabough who came from Albany, New York, to lead the camp and this camp proved to be a major turning point for Chris and his Inline Hockey

He started his representative hockey playing on the Lower North Island Region Under 12s team, coached by Mark Drummond and, since then, has gone on to play for New Zealand on the 14 and Under team at the Oceania Championships 2 years ago in Adelaide, South Australia. In 2010 he represented New Zealand at the Oceanias in New Plymouth playing in the 18's grade.
